Coahoma Community College News January 9, 2017 CCC now offering variety of online GED testing options In the past, individuals hoping to earn their GED diploma at testing sites like Coahoma Community College had only one option-the paper-based GED test that required test-takers to wait weeks for their scores via "snail-mail". "It was a hindrance for students who were trying to get into school or get a job because they had to wait at least two weeks before they could get their results," said CCC Testing Service Coordinator Linda Robinson. Thankfully, those daunting days are over. CCC now offers students two computer-based GED testing options -the Pearson VUE and, more recently, the HiSET. The new exam options have been a big help for several CCC GED students, including recent GED graduate Stalaina Smith of Woodville, MS. Smith, who dropped out in middle school, said she felt that she would never pass the GED exam because it was complicated. That's until her CCC GED instructor informed her about the HiSET exam option, which debuted this past fall semester. Smith became CCC's first student to register and successfully pass the new test format. "I loved the way the HiSET test was setup, and I highly recommend the test for those who might be struggling with the Pearson VUE exam," said Smith, who plans to continue her education at CCC and become a nurse. Mitchell McCaleb of Bay St. Louis, MS recently passed the Pearson VUE GED exam at CCC. He agreed that receiving a GED diploma isn't easy but it's worth it. "You may have to take some time on the practice tests, but it's possible. ...Now that I've passed the GED exam I have endless possibilities in careers and colleges that I can attend," said McCaleb, who also plans to join Tiger Nation in Spring 2017 and later the U.S. Air Force. According to Robinson, the Pearson VUE exam consists of four subjects. The exam costs $30 per subject area or $120 for the full test. Fees are waived for the 2nd and 3rd retake, leaving re-testers with only a $10 out-of-pocket fee. The HiSET exam consists of five subjects. The cost of the HiSET exam is $17 per subject area or $85 for the full test, which also includes two free additional attempts per subtest within 12 months of purchase. "The great news with the HiSET is that testers will receive most of their scores the same day," said Robinson. "They will only have to wait three to five days for the writing subject area score." The Pearson VUE exam is offered on CCC's main campus Tuesdays and Thursdays in Room 6 of Curry Hall and on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Ned W. Gathwright Workforce Development Center. The HiSET exam is offered on Tuesdays at CCC's main campus and on Wednesdays at the Ned W. Gathwright Workforce Development Center.
