Howard University Hospital Names James D. Edwards Interim CEO
James D. Edwards has been named Interim Chief Executive Officer of Howard University Hospital, effective Aug. 11. Edwards is a veteran hospital executive with more than two decades of senior leadership experience in health care management.
"I am proud to serve the patients of Howard University Hospital and be part of its history of providing high quality health care," Edwards said. "Working together with hospital employees and medical staff, I look forward to continuing Howard's reputation of preparing health care professionals that meet the needs of the nation while providing first-class service to the community."
Edwards served as the financial and operational team lead during a recent assessment of Howard University Hospital. As interim chief executive, Edwards will direct the day-to-day activities at the hospital, including clinical and administrative operations, financial management, information technology and community relations. He succeeds Herbert C. Buchanan, Jr.
Previously, Edwards served as president and chief executive officer of Greater Hazleton Health Alliance in Hazleton, Penn., where he steered the organization to improved operating and cash flow margins. He also developed, constructed and opened the Hazleton Health and Wellness Center, a key strategic initiative at Greater Hazleton. While Edwards was CEO, Hazleton was the winner of the Hospital Association of PA Excellence Award, the Quality Insights of PA Most Improved Hospital Award, and the Governor's Award for Labor/Management Cooperation.
He is a certified public accountant and received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Penn.
