Afro DC Community August 17, 2010 Bowie State Makes Strides in Science, Math Bowie State University, one of Maryland's leading historically Black institutions, continues to work toward becoming a key research school with gains in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The school's faculty and students recently took center stage in a published brochure that describes the STEM opportunities available at the Prince George's County school. "This brochure both celebrates the work we are doing at Bowie State University and reveals our commitment to collaborative research with our professional and academic colleagues locally, nationally, and internationally," said Dr. Mickey L. Burnim, president of Bowie State University, in a statement. "We hope it will contribute to our constituencies' knowledge and understanding of our work in the STEM areas and foster more networking opportunities for faculty and students." Much of the university's STEM research and teaching programs are focused in three departments - natural science, computer science, and mathematics. According to the school, several Bowie State faculty members have secured patents for their innovations, while others have had their work commercialized. Dr. George Acquaah, dean of the college of arts and sciences, said the brochure is an essential marketing tool for Bowie State."This brochure will serve as a vital tool to help people navigate and better understand what Bowie State offers in STEM research," he said. "The more people discover what makes BSU so special, the more they will want to partner with us on research initiatives."
