Student leaders are ready to go the distance

On August 5, 175 Trojan student leaders returned to the Land of Troy and for the annual Student Leadership Retreat. The theme of the retreat was 'GO THE DISTANCE' Preparing Present and Future Leaders to Continue the Marathon. The student leaders were engaged in leadership training sessions such as Are You a Star Team Player, Leadership to the Next Level, Express Yourself/Tell the Story/Be Accurate, What is Title IX, LGBTQIA Safe Zone, and team building exercises. Members of VSU staff and faculty and alumni were on hand to show their support with encouraging words of wisdom. At the completion of the retreat, the Trojan leaders were excited and ready to go the distance as they are prepared to provide a service of leadership to their peers, the Trojan community and represent Virginia State University.
Some of the participating student organizations included student government association, royal court, Trojan Activities Board, presidents of student organizations, resident assistants, Hill Fellows, and the Trojan Leadership Program. Staff members of the Division of Student Success and Engagement organized the retreat to help students grow their leadership potential, personally and professionally. The committee members were Desmond Crawley, residence life and housing; Joseph Lyons, career services; Kelvin Rachell, dean of students; Lauren Williams, Trojan Odyssey; Jairamie King, coordinator of leadership development and student activities; Derrick Peterson, interim director of residence life and housing; and Casey Perry, associate director of student life and engagement and student activities.
