Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating the November 8-11th Final Session of the HBCU Library Alliance Leadership Institute. We're meeting in Midtown Atlanta at the TWELVE Atlantic Station Hotel to continue leadership development training, hear project presentations and celebrate completing this progressive training.

Over the course of the Institute Lead Instructor Dr. Flavia Eldemire, Allen University (SC), Co-Instructor Reginald White, and experts from the HBCU Library Alliance membership have taught web-based classes on topics including Strategic Planning, Financial Leadership in Libraries, Change Management and Emotional Intelligence. Scholars have participated in classes, shared experiences and reminded us of the importance of communication as we strengthen our libraries. The Institute has been a valuable learning experience for my team and the Scholars.

The project is a key requirement of the Leadership Institute. Each institution will present a project as means of demonstrating mastery of the concepts and instruction in the institute. This project provides immediate value to the library and also provides a way of sharing knowledge within the community.

Nineteen librarians from thirteen institutions will impress us with their project presentations. We'll hear from:

  1. Alabama State University, Jamal Fisher - Blueprint: Creating A Cultural Learning Place at Levi Watkins Learning Center

  2. Bennett College (NC), Terrence Martin - An Evening Reference Librarian Turns Library Instruction on its Head

  3. Claflin University (SC), Morgan Montgomery - Implementing a Virtual Reference Service

  4. Coahoma Community College (MS), Yvonne Stanford and Rose Lockett - Information Literacy at Coahoma Community College

  5. Delaware State University, Rebecca Batson and Beverly Charlot - Migration from Ariel to ILLiad and Odyssey

  6. Johnson C. Smith University, Marcella McGowan and Michelle Orr - Survey Implications for Marketing and Outreach to Adult Learners and Faculty of the Metropolitan College at Johnson C. Smith University

  7. Lincoln University, Jerome Offord and Lois Marshall - Starting an Institutional Repository at Lincoln University

  8. Mississippi Valley State University, Violene Williams - Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills

  9. Savannah State University, Ivy Brannen and Lauren McMillan - What We Can Do For You: New Faculty Library Orientation

  10. St. Augustine's University, Clevell Roseboro and Jennifer Townes - Information Architecture: Transforming, Educating, Campaigning

  11. University of the Virgin Islands, Sherna Gumbs - Library Disaster Preparedness Recovery Plan

  12. West Virginia State University, Jennifer Zuccaro - Database Analysis

  13. Winston Salem-State University (NC), Carl Leak - Square Pegs Into Round Holes: The Quest to Teach Credit-Based Information Literacy Courses

I am so proud of the Scholars and look forward, with great anticipation, to the Final Session of the HBCU Library Alliance Leadership Institute.

Respectfully,

Sandra
