The Head, Division of Archives and Special Collections
and University Archivist

Purdue University Libraries seeks a Head of Archives and Special Collections, with a dual role as University Archivist. The Head of Archives and Special Collections will continue to develop special collections in the Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections Research Center. The University Archivist will have a unique leadership opportunity to develop the University's policies and practices for managing digital records and objects.

Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, is one hour from Indianapolis and two hours from Chicago in the historic Wabash River Valley. Purdue University Libraries faculty and staff are progressive and dynamic, moving beyond building traditional library collections and services to emerging technologies and information that support academic uses for students, faculty, and researchers. Our staff totals more than 200, including 60 faculty and professionals. Information literacy and e-science data management are areas of strategic research focus for library faculty.

The Division of Archives and Special Collections is located in the newly renovated state-of-the-art Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections Research Center, and is one of four divisions in Purdue Libraries. Archives and Special Collections include manuscripts, photographs, and artifacts related to Purdue University and its history. Notable collections include: The George Palmer Putnam Collection of Amelia Earhart Papers, the Flight Archives including the papers of Neil Armstrong, the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Collection of Time Management Studies, and the Charles A. Ellis papers (Golden Gate Bridge). The collection includes many rare books (e.g., Principia Mathematica) with particularly strong collections in the areas of the history of science, transportation, economics, and flight.

Responsibilities as the Head of the Division of Archives and Special Collections, (reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs):
*Responsible for all aspects of the management of Archives and Special Collections;
*Leads collection development and acquisition for the Archives and Special Collections Division;
*Establishes policies and procedures and works with supervisors and staff to determine workflows; oversees processing of archival records, personal papers and manuscripts, photographs, rare books, and related special collections, including the oversight of archival arrangement, description, preservation, and conservation activities; oversees reference, instruction, oral history, and research services for the Division;
*Works with the Digital Initiatives Steering Committee to set Libraries-wide priorities for digitization; investigates and explores the utilization of emerging technologies in records management and archiving;
*Oversees public programs, such as exhibitions and related engagement activities, and works with marketing staff to develop promotional materials for the Division as needed;
*Represents the Division and the Libraries by participating in media interviews and other promotional activities as needed;
*Identifies and cultivates donors with actual or potential interest in Special Collections and Archives; acts as a liaison between donors and the Libraries; writes grant proposals and seeks funding for programs;
*Oversees permissions process for scholarly use of works in the collections in publications and other products;

Responsibilities as the University Archivist, (reporting to the Dean of Libraries):
*Serves as steward of Purdue University's documents of historical value, faculty papers, publications and administrative papers?paper and electronic?and as an advocate for preservation of that record;
*Identifies key faculty and staff members for acquisition of papers and develops relationships with key University committees and communities;
*In collaboration with the Business Office, formulates policies and schedules related to the University documents of historical value and provides physical and intellectual access;

Required Qualifications:
*Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program (or equivalent);
*Minimum four to five years successful experience in Special Collections and/or archives or MLS with formal archival training or certification;
*Demonstrated ability in evaluating, selecting, and processing personal papers, organizational records, and rare and unique print and electronic collections;
*Knowledge of traditional finding aids and Encoded Archival Description (EAD) language; understanding of correct application of RLIN, AMC, VIM and other relevant standards;
*Knowledge of preservation and conservation methods and practices;
*Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and decision-making skills; demonstrated ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with senior administrators, alumni, colleagues, faculty, and staff;
*Commitment to engage in scholarship worthy of promotion and tenure as a faculty member at Purdue University;
*Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to speak to large audiences;
*Strong leadership capability, commitment to public service; strong commitment to high quality customer service to students, faculty, staff and other patrons;
*Strong organizational and project management skills.

Desired Qualifications:
*Knowledge and understanding of how archival science can be applied to scientific data management;
*Experience in college or university archives;
*Experience with fund-raising, grant-writing, and grant administration;
*Budgeting experience;
*Certified Archivist with knowledge of standard archival theories and practices in appraisal, preservation, arrangement, and description of archival and manuscript collections.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience in the context of Purdue University's salary structure.

Benefits: Faculty tenure-track position with a twelve-month appointment. Rank of assistant, associate, or professor depending on qualifications.
