Coahoma Community College News February 28, 2018 Coahoma Holds Dating Violence Awareness Day The CCC Campus Community was treated to a recent event aimed at bringing attention to a serious topic while doing so in a fun and casual manner. Dating Violence Awareness Day took place Tuesday, February 27, 2018, in the Zee A. Barron Student Union. Attendees were are able to receive helpful facts and statistics about dating violence as well as tasty treats. According to Inside Higher Ed, while not currently at the forefront of a national conversation, domestic violence remains as prevalent an issue among college students as sexual assault. One in five students have experienced domestic violence with a current partner -- a statistic that directly mirrors the U.S. Department of Justice's findings on student victims of sexual assault (though some have contested those findings). More than 30 percent of students say they have experienced domestic violence with a previous partner. Renee' Hall, coordinator of Counseling Service, sees events like this as a way to connect with students while providing them a wealth of knowledge and tools. "Our ultimate goal is to ensure that all students understand the signs of dating violence and are knowledgeable of the resources at their fingertips," said Hall. "We strive to provide a safe environment for our students during their two years at CCC." The event featured over ten vendors that provided information on topics from healthy relationships to violence prevention and intervention. Each were community partners that specialize in the area of dating violence in some facet. Faculty, staff & students wore orange ribbons to symbolize Dating Violence Awareness.
