ASU’s College of Education Ranked as a Top Producer of Teachers
Author: Timothy C. Ervin
ASU’s largest and oldest degree-granting college, the College of Education, is ranked as the third top producer of teachers among the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
HBCU Lifestyle, a publication that provides HBCU students and their families with information and resources for college admissions, campus life and financial aid, recently ranked Alabama State University as third in the nation in its listing of “Top 10 HBCUs that Produce Teachers.”
“This ranking has proven that the College of Education (COE) at ASU produces highly qualified graduates who will become leading professionals in their respective teaching fields,” said Dr. Doris Screws, dean of the College of Education. “This national ranking also acknowledges that the ASU COE programs prepare teachers to be decision makers who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to ethically and effectively integrate theory and practice in carrying out their professional goals.”
ASU has long been regarded as an institution from which to recruit top educators. COE is the University’s largest and oldest college. Students in the program have an opportunity to earn undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degrees in teaching, administration, educational leadership or school counseling.
Screws said COE graduates are provided opportunities to develop an understanding of teaching diverse cultures, technological capabilities, critical thinking and problem solving skills, reflective assessment strategies, and insight to the concept of pursuing learning as a lifetime endeavor.
“The College of Education at ASU strives to prepare prospective teachers for meeting the educational needs of all children, youth and adults,” Screws said.
