Variety of Summer Youth Camps to be Offered at ASU

Hundreds of schoolchildren swarm the ASU campus each summer, signaling the start of the University's numerous youth camps. This year, ASU will offer a variety of academic, performing arts and self-enrichment camps for area youth.

ASU's 2014 summer camps are as follows:

ACADEMIC/YOUTH COLLEGE CAMPS

Summer Kids/Youth College Adventure Program (SKYCAP)
Session 1: June 9-June 27
Session 2: July 7-July 25
Orientation: May 31, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Dunn-Oliver Acadome

A variety of academic and self-enrichment programs are offered at various locations, times and costs. Designed for students entering grades 1-12, courses are offered in reading/phonics, writing, English, social studies, mathematics, sciences, study skills, algebra, geometry, computers, swimming and more. Institute of Math, Science, Engineering and Technology (IMSET)
Session 1: June 9-27

UNITE Program

ASU UNITE is a pre-collegiate four-week summer program that runs Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The program is designed to attract the attention and spark the interest of high school students (grades 9-12) who are intrigued about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The project will select 15 talented and highly motivated high school students from underserved and underrepresented populations reflected in Alabama's public school system to prepare for promising STEM careers.

ASPIRE Head-Start Camp
June 23-July 25

Students in grades 6-12 can get a head start for the upcoming school year by enrolling in the ASPIRE Head-Start Camp. This camp focuses on study skills, organization skills and social skills. Hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday-Thursday. For more information, contact the ASPIRE office at 334-229-6796.


National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI)
Dates: TBA
This residential program will introduce rising 9th and 10th grade students from Alabama's Black Belt region to promising careers in transportation. The camp will encourage students to begin charting courses to prepare for transportation careers. For more information, call 334-229-4465 or 334-229-4686.


PERFORMING ARTS CAMPS

2014 Summer Band Camp
June 8-14

Designed for 8th through 12th-grade students, this camp provides clinics and exciting activities for bands, flag corps, twirlers, drum majors, majorettes and directors. For more information, call 334-229-4289.


Tonea Stewart Performing Arts Camps
June-July

Tonea Stewart Performing Arts Camps are categorized by age and interest. The camps, spanning four age groups, offer an opportunity to experience the day-to-day tasks necessary to mount a production. Each camp is designed to teach participants about the world of theatre while building self-esteem and character. Participants attend classes, workshops and training sessions, which culminate in an original final production. The camps are as follows:

  • TAPS - Theatre Artists Performance School: June 2-14, ages 6-12. $300. TAPS is a performance-based, two-week day camp. It is held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
  • CAMP 3T - Teaching Through Theatre: June 22 - 28, ages 13-17. $350. Camp 3T is a residential camp offering classes in acting, singing, dancing and oral interpretation. The camp participants reside in the dormitories.
  • Technical Theatre Initiative (TTI): June 9-14 and 22-28, Ages 15-17. $200. TTI camp is designed to give participants first-hand experience with the basics of costumes, lights, set design, entertainment law, sound, videography, photography, editing, stage management, life skills to include dressing for success, speech and diction, as well as interview ethics and interpersonal communication. The camp is Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • CAMP GIFTED (Giving Individuals Freedom to Express Diversity): July 15 - 24, ages 13-21. $250. Camp GIFTED is a day camp for individuals with special needs, ages 13-21. Participants are involved in acting, singing and dancing. The camp meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for two weeks.
  • Adult Repertory Performing Arts Camp (ARPAC): July 10-13. $300. ARPAC is a three-day residential workshop for participants ages 19 and older in acting for television, film and stage. Participants and staff are housed in the dormitories.
