Bethune-Cookman University News August 16, 2018 B-CU Florida Teaching Certification Exam Workshop Makes Impact on Volusia County Educators Since its inception, B-CU has produced world-class educators via its teacher education programs. Within the last year, the College of Education has put focus back on expanding educational opportunities such as the Florida Teaching Certification Exam (FTCE) prep course within Volusia and Flagler counties, preparing those interested for career readiness. According to Florida's Sunshine State Standards, students studying the education discipline must pass the FTCE to ensure educators have the proper qualifications to support the academic success of students. The B-CU Hastings campus has supported the FTCE prep course over the last few years. "The FTCE workshops were created to respond to the large number of teachers who were being displaced from the classrooms because they had not passed the certification examination," says Dr. Gale Gibson Gayle B-CU Chief Online Learning Officer. Most recently, a recent graduate of Daytona State College participated in the teaching certification prep course and passed the exam. As Volusia County students are heading back to school, the Daytona State graduate will begin teaching as a licensed educator due to her participation in the B-CU prep course. "I love that we are also assisting young students from other colleges," said Dr. Diana Lee, Director of the Odessa Chambliss Center for Health Equity at B-CU and neighbor of the student's family. "We were elated to share the news of her achievements," she added. The FTCE prep course covers all areas of the certification exam(s) to include general knowledge, paraprofessional examination, leadership, ESE, and more.
