EWC Holds First Civil Citation Program Graduation
Edward Waters College held its first Civil Citation Program graduation ceremony with community members and program participants on March 2.

The program serves as a service referral provider for Teen Court with minority youth, particularly those in Jacksonville's Zone 4. It also captures the views and efforts of Wansley Walters, Secretary of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, on juvenile delinquency, reform and the agency's Roadmap to System Excellence.

"This program serves as a provider to the community by offering alternative routes to completing Civil Citation sanctions via the Situational Environmental Circumstances Model," said Darren Gardner, EWC site coordinator. "The SEC model is a conceptual framework that emphasizes individual development, academic and vocational achievement, job readiness, family; and community support for high-risk youth ages 10 to 17."

Within the first 90 days of entering the program, youth are required to complete four bi-weekly workshop sessions, two in "Accountability" and two in "Chartering Your Path." They are also required to complete at least eight hours of group community service.

Five students were acknowledged for successfully matriculating through the program.

"This graduation is the launch pad for all other juvenile justice initiatives within the college," Gardner said. "We will continue to be a resource to the youth of the community; and our students will continue to be positive mentors to youth."

Organizations interested in conducting workshops or forums within the Civil Citation Program should call (904) 470-8001.
