North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Library Services.
An 1890 Land Grant University, North Carolina A&T State University enjoys a long-standing national reputation in learning, discovery, and engagement. With a student body in excess of 10,500 and a faculty of 680+, North Carolina A&T offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through its eight (8) schools and colleges in addition to certificate programs. The University graduates the largest number of African American students in engineering, science, and technology in the nation. It offers over 50 Masters and six (6) PH.D programs. The University is one (1) of the sixteen constituent units of the University of North Carolina (UNC) and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The strategic vision focuses the University on interdisciplinary scholarly activities in a learner-centered environment. F. D. Bluford Library is the intellectual heart of the campus that provides a place for interaction, collaboration, study and reflection. Holdings include approximately 700,000 volumes, 125,00 print and electronic serial subscriptions and more than 100,000 e-books. The Library is a select depository for federal and state publications. The staff is comprised of 50 full-time positions. The Library also provides more than 200 workstations with wireless access throughout the building. In providing service to the University community, physical access is available 24 hours, five (5) days per week. Additional information about F. D. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Dean is the chief academic administrative officer for the University Library reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean is expected to provide visionary leadership and strategic management of learner-centered services that enhance the interdisciplinary mission of the University. Leadership and management responsibilities include: establishment and administration of library policies and procedures; budgetary and human resource management, assessment of library programs and services; and collaboration with the University community to support discovery, engagement and the use of knowledge. The Dean is expected to promote strategic thinking and initiatives related to scholarly technology and scholarly communication within the academic community with a focus on vision, collaboration, consistency, and integration with broader information technology initiatives on campus. The Dean also oversees recruitment; evaluation, reappointment, promotion and tenure of faculty; supports faculty development in teaching, scholarship, research and grant procurement; and actively participates in fundraising.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have a Master's Degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA accredited program; thorough knowledge of academic library principles, practices and procedures; the ability to work collaboratively and collegially with library staff and University community; ability to present ideas effectively, orally and in writing, and must also demonstrate successful administrative and financial management experience in an academic library. Significant administrative experience in a research-intensive university library setting; documented involvement and accomplishment related to developing strong relationships with faculty to understand general and discipline-specific information needs. Knowledge of current trends and challenges in academic research and scholarly communication. The Dean is expected to have a proven record to commensurate with tenure at the rank of professor.
