Bowie State University News February 13, 2019 New Research Program to Engage Students in Global Learning Undergrad Students Get to Work with Scientists at Bowie State & in Kenya Undergraduate students with a strong background in biology have the opportunity to work with researchers in Kenya this summer to uncover potential health benefits of native plants with Bowie State University's new global experience program. With a grant of nearly $250,000 from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Natural Sciences will support eight students in a nine-week, hands-on research program<https://www.bowiestate.edu/globalresearch/> with BSU's Associate Professor Anne Osano<https://www.bowiestate.edu/academics-research/faculty-staff-directory/details/osano/>, a celebrated botanist and plant researcher, along with scientists from the Egerton University and University of Kenya. The deadline to apply<https://www.bowiestate.edu/academics-research/colleges/college-arts-sciences/departments/natural-sciences/research-experience-for-underg/application-requirements/> is March 31, 2019. The two-year program will engage a total of 16 students in summer research that will prepare them for careers in science and graduate study. Each participant will gain valuable experience working on projects that could generate new breakthroughs in medicine and health sciences. By the program's end, the students will be prepared to present their findings at scholarly conferences or submit papers for academic publications. Students will receive a $575 weekly stipend, along with round-trip airfare and lodging. The program is open to any student from around the country who meets the following criteria: * At least 18 years old by June 1, 2019 * A U.S. citizen or a U.S. permanent resident or its territories * In good standing in their undergraduate degree program * A 3.0 GPA or higher In past projects, Dr. Osano and BSU students have worked on plant research with scientists in Kenya, and Dr. Osano has continued in that work with students in her plant biology and plant metabolic lab at Bowie State's Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Nursing<https://bowiestate.edu/sciencecenter>.
