Coahoma Community College February 24, 2020 Division of Academic Affairs Opens Academic Counseling Center Recently, the Coahoma Community College Division of Academic Affairs opened an Academic Counseling Center (ACC) to aid in the College's student success initiatives. The center, housed in the J. W. Addison Building, supports the student community through collaborative and comprehensive advising services as students explore, navigate, and move toward graduation. The ACC is the designated advising office for students who are exploratory (undecided), undeclared, and students-in-transition. Choosing an academic home at Coahoma is a process, and the ACC lead academic advisors are available to assist students each step of the way. According to LaShundra Crittle, Academic Affairs counselor, the Academic Counseling Center serves as a centralized location for students to receive holistic academic advising. "As a counselor, I often think of the 'whole student' and how I can assist in developing greater educational, personal, and career goals," said Crittle. "This new center is a result of our Achieving the Dream/Student Success Initiative and Quality Enhancement Plan." ACC advisors collaborate closely with other campus partners, such as academic departments and faculty, academic retention, the Office of the Registrar, Disability Services, Financial Aid, and many more campus entities. "As an academic counselor, I believe stepping out from behind the desk and interacting more with students is a plus," Crittle added. "I wholeheartedly see the Academic Counseling Center as a driving force in creating meaningful day-to-day interactions with students." C. Holmes, Academic Affairs counselor, is most proud of the center's open-door policy and encourages students to visit any time. "It is exciting to aid in the educational plans and development that are consistent with students' aspirations, interests, strengths, and values," said Holmes. "It's great to be a piece of the puzzle that encourages holistic engagement with the college experiences that prepares students for a life of learning." The center fits CCC's vision for engaging, equipping and empowering students to achieve success.
