The BASH to Celebrate SUNO's 60th Anniversary

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) was founded as a branch unit of Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College in Baton Rouge (SUBR) on Sept. 4, 1956. In honor of the University's 60th anniversary, the Southern University at New Orleans Foundation will celebrate SUNO during its annual BASH at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans 7-11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2016

SUNO opened its doors September 21, 1959 on a 17-acre site located in historic Pontchartrain Park, a subdivision of primarily African American single-family residents in eastern New Orleans. Established as an open community of learners, classes began with 158 freshmen, one building and a motivated faculty of 15. The University offered 10 courses in four academic disciplines: Humanities, Science, Social Science and Commerce.

Today, SUNO serves as a beacon for those looking for educational advancement in an environment that provides the personal attention students need for success. The University's mission is be one of America's premier institutions of higher learning and to graduate students ready to contribute to the city, state and nation.

The BASH, which began in 2004, is named for SUNO's chancellor emeritus and first chancellor, the late Emmett W. Bashful, the event's first honoree. The 2016 BASH co-chairs are SUNO alumni Micaela Bowers and Barbara Lacen Keller. Entertainment will be provided by Water Seed.

"Since its founding, Southern University at New Orleans, a Historically Black College and University, has served not only the black community, but the New Orleans community at large," said SUNO Foundation Chair Frank Williams. "As the University's Foundation, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on SUNO's great past and acknowledge its extraordinary present, but more importantly, we want to plant more seeds to ensure its future is just as bright."

In honor of the special celebration, this year's BASH will be kicked up a few notches, according to Gloria B. Moultrie, vice chancellor of SUNO's Office of Community Outreach/University Advancement. "We encourage the community to come out to honor SUNO, and to help future students. It's a great way to celebrate 60 years."

Sponsorship opportunities and tickets are available online at the SUNO Office of Community Outreach/University Advancement in the Emmett W. Bashful Administration Building, Room 312, 6400 Press Drive, New Orleans, LA 70126. For information, call 504-286-5341.
