Howard University News April 16, 2015 Howard's Gallery of Art Among Top 50 in the United States Howard University's Gallery of Art has been ranked among the 50 best college museums in the nation by CollegeRank.net. "We are very proud of this distinction and the recognition it brings to the Gallery and to Howard University," said Dr. Gwendolyn H. Everett, associate dean for the Division of Fine Arts, who serves as the Gallery's director. "This ranking acknowledges the sustained excellence the Gallery of Art has shown over eight decades, since its founding." The Gallery of Art was established in 1928, by action of the Board of Trustees, "to make revolving exhibitions of contemporary arts and crafts available for visitation and study to students." Two years later, the Gallery formally opened with a traveling exhibition of oil paintings, watercolors and drawings assembled and circulated by the College Art Association of America. The success of this exhibition led to a policy and program to develop a permanent collection. Over the years, the permanent collection has grown to nearly 4,000 works of art, featuring works by African-American masters, as well as African artifacts bequeathed by collectors such as Alain Locke, and Italian Renaissance and Baroque paintings donated by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. "The Gallery serves as an academic resource for our students, faculty, alumni and our administration," acknowledges Dr. Everett. "In this effort, we host an array of temporary exhibitions; among them are "Building on Tradition" from the Dianne Whitfield-Locke & Carnell Locke Collection," "Reflections: African American Life from the Myrna Colley-Lee Collection," and "Visualizing Legacy: American and African American Art Highlights from the Permanent Collection." Students and faculty from the University's Department of Art also have opportunities to showcase their work in annual exhibitions. The 45th Annual Faculty Art Exhibition and the 84th Annual Art Student Exhibition currently are on view. CollegeRank.net aims to rank everything college and dissect every aspect of student life.
