FSU-RISE scholar Wins Poster Presentation at 2014 Biomedical Research Conference
Giovanna Bermudez-Quiroz, a senior biology major and chemistry minor at Fayetteville State University, waited anxiously to learn if she was selected to be a winner in the poster presentation competition at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in San Antonio, Texas, November 12-16, 2014. Finally, her name was called! Giovanna was selected to be a conference presentation winner in the Microbiology category.
Giovanna is a FSU Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (FSU-RISE) scholar, who works in the research laboratory of Dr. Kristen Delaney. Giovanna presented her laboratory research project entitled, "The Effects of Oxidative Stress in Antioxidant Deficient Strains of Escherichia coli" during the research conference. Giovanna was among 10 FSU-RISE scholars who presented their research work at ABRCMS out of a total of 14 scholars who attended the conference. More than 3,700 students, faculty, and vendors attended ABRCMS this year with more than 1,700 research presentations in 20 areas of biomedical and behavioral research. Dr. James Raynor, Dr. Subir Nagdas, Ms. Cathy Baldwin and Ms. Amita Naik also attended ABRCMS from FSU.
Giovanna is a 4.0 G.P.A. student who plans to graduate from FSU in May, 2015. She plans to pursue a joint MD-Ph.D. degree upon graduating from FSU. In its 12th year of operation, FSU-RISE has had at least 12 conference presentation winners since 2002, when the program was originally funded. FSU-RISE is federally-funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) the Division of the National Institutes for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). The ultimate goal of the program is to prepare FSU biology and chemistry majors to become more competitive applicants for Ph.D. programs in the biomedical science field. Beginning in the fall of 2015, FSU-RISE will also begin training math and computer science majors for these careers. For more information about the FSU-RISE program, please contact Cathy Baldwin, program coordinator at (910) 672-1081 or Dr. James E. Raynor, Jr., director, at (910) 672-1023.
