North Carolina Central University September 16, 2013 NCCU Retains High Ranking Among HBCUs in 2014 U.S. News & World Report List North Carolina Central University retained its ranking among the top public institutions in U.S. News & World Report's 2014 list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In its annual ranking of top postsecondary schools, U.S. News placed NCCU in a tie for 12th among the nation's more than 80 HBCUs - schools that were founded for African-Americans in the 19th and early 20th centuries. NCCU's ranking was unchanged from the 2013 annual list. It was one of just four public universities in the top 12. The top seven schools were all private institutions, led by Spelman College and Morehouse College in Atlanta and Howard University in Washington. The highest-ranked public HBCU, in the eighth spot, was North Carolina A&T State University. The other public universities in the top group were Delaware State and Florida A&M, tied at No. 9. The U.S. News rankings are based on a series of weighted indicators. They are, in descending order of importance: graduation and retention rates; assessment by peers at other institutions; faculty resources; admission selectivity; financial resources; and alumni giving.
