Coahoma Community College News November 8, 2016 Pullen honored as CCC 2016 Humanities Teacher of the Year While it's not his native language, Andy Pullen has used Spanish as a vehicle to impact the lives of students at Coahoma Community College since 2011. And because of his dedication and unwavering commitment to education, CCC is proud to announce Pullen as its 2016 Humanities Teacher of the Year. Each year the Mississippi Humanities Council recognizes October's designation as Arts and Humanities Month by bestowing Humanities Teacher Awards to outstanding faculty in traditional humanities fields at colleges and universities across the state. Pullen, who serves as a Spanish Instructor, was selected as CCC's honoree this year on the recommendation of CCC Dean of Academic Affairs Rolanda Brown and President Dr. Valmadge Towner. He will be honored during a special reception at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Magnolia Room of the Zee A. Barron Student Union. During the reception, Pullen will make a professional presentation entitled "Spanish: It's not just for travel", which will highlight unconventional reasons to learn the language. Towner said the institution is fortunate to have someone of Pullen's caliber as an faculty member. "Mr. Pullen is a soft-spoken but candid faculty member. ...He is subtly articulate and masterful in his teaching craft," said Towner. "Over the years, he has demonstrated a high level of concern for his students and this college. Mr. Pullen has a level of dedication for serving through teaching that is second to none." A native of Horn Lake, Miss., Pullen received an associate's degree in Communications with an emphasis in Broadcasting in 2001 from Northwest Mississippi Community College and a bachelor's degree in Communications/ Broadcast and Electronic Media in 2003, as well as bachelor's and master's degrees in Spanish in 2008 and 2010 respectively from the University of Mississippi. In addition the reception, Pullen's designation as Humanities Teacher of the Year also carries a cash award and complimentary ticket to the Mississippi Humanities Council Awards Banquet. There, Pullen will join other selected recipients from colleges and universities across the state in a special awards ceremony. "Coahoma Community College has provided stellar education services to students for nearly 70 years due to the academic excellence and quality instruction given by faculty such as Mr. Pullen," said Towner. "It is because of educators like Mr. Pullen that we are able to prepare and equip students to excel and exceed at the highest levels of learning.
