The 1st Annual Hall Johnson Summer Camp

Allen University is pleased to announce the 1st Annual Hall Johnson Summer Camp for high school choral students.  The camp will take place on the campus of Allen University from July 6-11, 2014.

Hall Johnson, a 1908 graduate of Allen University, impacted the world through his musical compositions and arrangements of Negro spirituals.  After graduating from Allen University, he later studied at the University of Pennsylvania, the Juilliard School and the University of Southern California.  He composed music for Hollywood films, Broadway and coached singers Marian Anderson, Robert McFerrin and Shirley Verrett.  This camp seeks to continue Hall Johnson's legacy by placing an emphasis on his music and his contemporaries.

Allen University is excited that Roland Carter has signed on as festival conductor for this year's Camp.  Roland Carter is Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and is a distinguished composer, conductor, educator, and pianist. His accomplishments as a leading figure in the choral arts include concerts with major choruses and orchestras in prestigious venues nationwide; as well as lectures, workshops and master classes.

Campers will explore the music of Hall Johnson, the history of the spiritual and rehearse with the camp concert choir.  The week of rehearsals and classes will culminate in a concert performance directed by Roland Carter at the Willie H. Johnson Educational Center at 6:00 PM on July 11, 2014.
