Alabama State University’s Board of Trustees has approved a three-year contract extension for President Gwendolyn E. Boyd.

During today’s meeting of the Alabama State University Board of Trustees, a proposal to renew the contract of President Gwendolyn E. Boyd for another three years passed in a vote of 8-6, extending Boyd’s leadership to the year 2019.

Board Chairman Locy Baker said that approving the three-year extension will give Boyd more time to complete a number of projects she has started since taking over in February 2014. He said the vote ensures strategic continuity and maintains ASU’s positive momentum.

“The vote to extend Dr. Boyd’s contract was very important for the University,” Baker said. “Now, she will be able to finish some of the initiatives that she started which are necessary for the University to grow.”

Boyd said she is honored to have the opportunity to continue leading the University.

“I am grateful to God for the opportunity to continue to serve my alma mater as President. This vote shows the stability that SACS and other rating agencies need to see at Alabama State University,” Boyd said. “Now, we need to continue to move forward collectively.”

Other Board Actions

  • The Board approved a $156.5 million operating budget for the 2016 fiscal year, which includes an increase of $125 in student fees.

  • A resolution was passed to submit a letter of intent to acquire Paterson Court apartments and to locate the funds needed for the purchase.

  • A resolution was approved to add a Title IX gender-based misconduct policy to The Pilot (student handbook). The policy protects all students against all aspects of sexual harassment.
