Howard Hosts White House Interfaith Campus Initiative

The Office of the Dean of the Chapel at Howard University will host President Obama's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge Conference and the U.S. Department of Education on July 9 and 10 in Cramton Auditorium.

Nearly 300 college and universities from across the nation have responded to President Obama's call for members of diverse student religious groups to help develop ways to build understanding between different communities and contribute to the common good. Howard University President Sidney A. Ribeau welcomes representatives from these institutions as they convene on main campus for the two-day conference.

"We are excited to host this important conference. Interfaith cooperation and dialogue are essential to global citizenship and leadership," said Bernard L. Richardson, Ph,D., dean of the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel. "As our students prepare to impact this world, Howard University maintains its commitment to fostering education and development in this area."

The President's Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge started with encouragement from the White House to American colleges, community colleges, and universities to commit to a year of interfaith and community service programming on campus. These institutions have often been at the forefront of solving our nation's greatest challenges, from homelessness to mentoring to the environment, while building social capital and civility.
