Celebration to Feature Open House and Technology Presentations
Center Funded by $932,000 Broadband Technology Opportunities Program Grant
The new Coppin Heights-Rosemont Family Computer Center will hold a Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday, September 16th, starting at 11 a.m. in Coppin State University's Health and Human Services Building. The new computer center, which has been open for six weeks, features 15 training and education programs designed to create jobs and promote education and health for 35,000 residents in West Baltimore.
The Center and its activities are made possible by a $932,000 Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant to Coppin State University from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The NTIA is a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Thursday's celebration will feature brief remarks from several individuals, followed by an open house and technology presentations by people who have already completed courses in the Center. Event attendees will also include community members and students. A computer center training program will also be in session during the event. Leading the remarks will be Mr. Anthony Wilhelm, the national director of the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program in the NTIA. Other featured speakers include Dr. Reginald Avery, President of Coppin State University; Dr. York Bradshaw, the Executive Director of the Coppin Heights-Rosemont Family Computer Center; and representatives from several partner organizations, including Comcast and the One-Economy Corporation. "Thursday will be a very exciting day for the Coppin Heights-Rosemont Family Computer Center and West Baltimore," said Dr. Bradshaw. "Working with our partners and the community, we are offering many classes and programs for virtually every age group and skill level.
We have already had many elementary school students and senior adults take part in our programs, some at the beginning levels and some more advanced. This public computer center is for everyone in the community."
