'College Bound' Summer Camp for Foster Care Youth to be Held at SC State

SC State's Social Work Program, in partnership with The nsoro Foundation, will host the foundation's College Bound summer camp for 30 youth participants who are in foster care or emancipated. The camp will be held from June 17-22 on the campus of SC State and is free of charge.

Studies have shown that foster care youth are at high risk of incarceration, homelessness, suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and receive on average, 12 placements during just four years of high school.

The nsoro Foundation's College Bound program is designed to equip youth in foster care with essential academic and social skills that will help rewrite their future. As educational partners, the Social Work Program and the foundation's objective is to inspire participants to earn a college degree and achieve all of their educational and financial goals. College Bound seeks to afford participants the opportunity to discover and develop their self-worth, talents and abilities.

Activities for the week-long camp will give participants exciting hands-on experiences in various fields, including science, business and engineering. Participating in these creative opportunities within a collegiate environment such as SC State, is a way for the youth to "experience a vision beyond circumstance, a reason to dream, and the educational roadmap to break the cycles of abuse, poverty and incarceration," according to the foundation's website.

SC State is the first university in South Carolina to partner with The nsoro Foundation. Since 2005, the foundation has awarded over 700 scholarships for postsecondary education and currently serves 340 scholars at 229 universities. SC State will join several universities that are currently in the College Bound partnership, such as Albany State University, Temple University, University of Georgia, Savannah State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Clark Atlanta University, Kennesaw State University and the University of Alabama.

To be eligible for College Bound, a student must:

  • Be in foster care, a ward of the state or emancipated

  • Be entering 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2018

  • Have a strong desire and/or plans to go to a college or a university
