Today I’m celebrating Bernard Anthony Harris, Jr., the first African American<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American> to perform an extra-vehicular activity<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra-vehicular_activity> during the second of his two Space Shuttle<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Program> flights. Harris was born on June 26, 1956 in Temple, Texas. As a 1974 graduate of Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Texas<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Antonio,_Texas>, Harris was actively involved in science fairs, book clubs and other school activities. He received a B.S.<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Science> degree in biology from University of Houston<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Houston> in 1978. He earned his MD<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Medicine> degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Tech_University_Health_Sciences_Center> School of Medicine in 1982 and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayo_Clinic> in 1985. Dr. Harris has been recognized several times by NASA and other organizations for his professional and academic achievements. In 1996 he received an honorary doctorate<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorary_doctorate> from the Morehouse College<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morehouse_College> School of Medicine. He later received honorary doctorates from Stonybrook University<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonybrook_University>, New Jersey Institute of Technology<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Institute_of_Technology>, and the University of Houston<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Houston>. He has also received a NASA Space flight medal, a NASA Award of Merit, a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the 2000 Horatio Alger Award.
