Coahoma Community College News March 7, 2019 CCC Educational Talent Search Students Win First Place in Academic Bowl Competition Recently, the academic team from the Educational Talent Search Program of Coahoma Community College joyously took first place at a state-level competition held at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi. The team made up of students from area schools including W. A. Higgins Middle School, J. W. Stampley 9th Grade Academy, Coahoma County Jr. High School and Coahoma County High School went head-to-head with the Hinds Community College ETS team in the Academic Bowl of Knowledge and defeated them, thus advancing to the regional level competition in Atlanta, Georgia, March 29-30. The students took a 25-minute multiple choice written exam, contended in a 15-minute spelling bee and participated in a 30-minute "Super Quiz." They were challenged with questions pulled from a varied range of subjects-language and literature, science and technology, leisure and sports, social studies, current events, popular culture, mathematics and the arts. Director of Coahoma's Educational Talent Search Program Kimberly Bee said she is extremely proud of her team participants, pointing out that the state TRIO competition is always a great event. "I am proud of the intelligence and self-confidence under pressure the Academic Bowl participants displayed throughout the competition," she said. "We only had a few weeks to work with students to prepare for what takes months of studying, training and hard work by each student. My congratulations to the participants, ETS staff, parents and school administrators, all of whom contributed to the success of the team." JoDarylrius Blake, Denisse Dimas, Layla Griffin, MacKenzie Morris, Greg Neely III, Marlene Dimas, Myranda Coleman, Iyona Murry, Christopher Murphy, Leatha Winters and Frederick Walker all participated as members of Coahoma's ETS Academic Team. Excited about the win, Educational Coordinator of the program Felisha Stevenson said, "Knowing the students beat out their competitors shows that their long hours of practices paid off."
