Alice Walker Returns to Spelman as Artist-in-Residence
Starting Oct. 3, award-winning author, activist and alumna Alice Walker will spend three days engaging Spelman College students about writing and social justice issues as the Mellon Artist-in-Residence. During her visit, she will attend classes, serve as the Oct. 4 convocation speaker and meet with the President’s Book Circlehttp://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=58752452&msgid=775055&act=ITJZ&c=519201&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spelman.edu%2Fabout-us%2Foffice-of-the-president%2Fbook-circle. Walker, who attended Spelman from 1961 to 1963, kicked off her campus activities on Oct. 3 with an afternoon visit to the “Twentieth Century Black Women’s Writers” class. Later this evening, Walker will have dinner and a conversation with the 25 students who are members of this fall’s Book Circle. Leading up to her visit, the group read three of her novels — “The Color Purple,” “The Temple of My Familiar” and “Possessing the Secret of Joy.” Walker will wrap up her visit on Oct. 5, with a lunch and dialogue with Women’s Studies students at the Women’s Research and Resource Center. The event supports the College’s mission to inspire students to think critically while promoting the arts and interdisciplinary learning that are essential to a top-tier 21st century, liberal arts education.
