Claflin University to Reflect on MLK’s Legacy with Panel Discussion and Program Jan. 17
Claflin University will remember the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special observance ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 17.
“It is vital that we take pause to commemorate the visionary legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr,” said President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale. “Because of Dr. King's peaceful approach and selfless commitment to Civil Rights, this nation is now a place where equal opportunity exists for all citizens.”
The ceremony will be held in the Grace Thomas Kennedy Auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. with a panel discussion on King’s life and legacy. The panel will feature School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Dr. Peggy S. Ratliff, University Chaplain Rev. Dr. Ken Walden, Associate Professor of History Dr. Millicent Brown, OCAB Community Action Agency Executive Director Calvin Wright and Student Government Association Chaplain Keiko Cooley.
The public is encouraged and invited to attend. A program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the same location where Rev. Dr. Johnny B. Hill, associate professor of philosophy and religion, will be the ceremony's keynote speaker.
A native of Vidalia, Ga., Hill has Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees from Duke University Divinity School. While there, he established the Unity-In-Action Race Reconciliation Conference and Walltown Neighborhood Ministries, a joint program aimed a community revitalization, cultural education and teenage job training.
