WVSU Creators Program Hosts Workshop on 3-D Animation

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - West Virginia State University's (WVSU) Creators Program workshop series wraps its spring session with a seminar on 3-D animation at the WVSU Economic Development Center (EDC) Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The hands-on workshop will introduce beginners to Blender, a free, open-source 3-D software. Participants will experience exercises involving cameras, lights, animating and rendering 3-D, CGI videos as well as sculpting sets and characters.

"You could think of Blender as the ultimate video game with virtually unlimited levels," said Steve Gilliand, WVSU communications professor, noting that attendees need not be artists or computer scientists to attend.

Gilliand, who will lead the workshop, has worked as a cinematographer, videographer and editor on a variety of productions including documentaries, commercials and music videos. He has experience in both live-action and animated filmmaking.

The Creators Program launched in 2012 as a series of community workshops for all levels focusing on skills and knowledge essential to creating for mass media and art. WVSU partners with the West Virginia Economic Development Council and the West Virginia Film Office on the series.

The workshop costs $20, and WVSU students with ID can attend for free. Space is limited for the event, and registration is required. To register, visit wvsuedc.orghttp://www.wvsuedc.org/ and click on "The Creators Program" tab.

The WVSU EDC is located at 1506 Kanawha Blvd. W. in Charleston.
