General Summary:

Xavier University of Louisiana's University Library seeks a dynamic, engaging, and collaborative professional to lead the University Library's scholarly communication efforts in coordination with internal and external partners. Reporting to the Head of Research and Technology, the Scholarly Communications Librarian identifies, develops, and promotes strategic scholarly communication services and programs. The incumbent engages others around academic communication issues through outreach, education, training, and collaborative projects. The successful candidate will also be responsible for outreach, information literacy instruction, research support, and collection development in assigned disciplines and programs.

The Scholarly Communication Librarian will help provide leadership and support for two primary services: the institutional repository and XULA Digital Commons, as well as lead scholarly communications, academic publishing, and copyright services. The Scholarly Communication Librarian should have a good understanding of these products and carry out routine tasks such as batch uploading or metadata reconciliation. They will also receive assistance with front and back end technical support by the Systems Librarian; work with subject specialty librarians on collections development and data acquisition, and assess users' unique needs around this technology and research outputs. The Scholarly Communication Librarian will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the Library's Data Services to create services and policies related to research data management.

Job Responsibilities:
●      Plan, implement and evaluate sustainable services and policies that support open access, preservation, and broad dissemination of University research and data.
●      Oversee and manage XULA Digital Commons and Xavier’s institutional repository.
●      Consult with faculty, graduate students, and university staff on best practices or strategies to better manage, describe, preserve, and make available scholarly work.
●      Participate in local, regional, and national initiatives or meetings related to standards, best practices, and research lifecycle management activities and services.
●      Provide general and specialized reference support virtually or at public service desks
●      Support or train librarians on scholarly communication services or concepts where appropriate.
●      Lead the Library’s scholarly communication program. Work collaboratively to set directions, manage projects, and educate the Xavier community.
●      Serve as the Library’s expert on scholarly communication including, but not limited to, alternative publishing models, intellectual property rights, scholarly visibility and impact, online identity management, and equitable access to the University’s scholarly output.
●      Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, students, and staff.
●      Implement an active and engaging outreach program to ensure awareness of scholarly communication issues and trends among the Xavier community.
●      Oversee library publication projects.
●      Advocate for community needs for other library staff.
●      Advocate for campus-wide for open access.
●      Lead exploration of best practices in documenting and strengthening access to the University’s intellectual output.
●      Survey and assess community needs for scholarly communication services and programs.
●      Partner with faculty on research projects and course design.
●      Consult with faculty, students, and staff on scholarly communication issues and create educational resources on scholarly communication topics.
●      Serve as liaison to one or more academic departments or programs.
●      Participate in library liaison services, with collection development, library instruction, and outreach responsibilities, to academic departments as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
●      MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution, or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
●      A clear understanding of academic research and scholarly communication practices.
○      Experience advising others on scholarly communication topics.
○      Demonstrate the ability for developing effective and strategic partnerships with members of a diverse community.
○      Ability to effectively articulate complex concepts such as copyright, fair use, and open access.
○      Knowledge of and interest in issues, trends, and technologies related to scholarly communication.
○      Experience in successfully managing collaborative projects.
○      Demonstrate the ability to design and implement practical training modules/tools
○      Experience using technology to support service innovation and productivity enhancements
○      Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:
●      Record of interactions with faculty that demonstrate a deep understanding of the scholarly process
●      Significant experience managing multiple projects concurrently in various stages of completion
●      Between 1-3 years of experience of facilitating instruction or workshops with undergraduate or graduate students
