MVSU HOSTS MENTAL HEALTH COLLOQUIUM

Mississippi Valley State University's Master of Social Work students will host the 2nd Annual Mental Health Colloquium on Tuesday, December 4 in the William Sutton Administration Building, Auditorium 103. There will be two sessions: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The colloquium's goal is to promote awareness of mental health disorders; identify assessment tools useful in assessing mental disorders; and to identify effective mental health treatment and interventions. During the colloquium, students will present their research on mental disorders affecting adults and provide an overview of the disorder, epidemiology, differential diagnosis, treatment approaches and interventions, and the research relevant to social work.

"This colloquium is an opportunity to show that students in the Master of Social Work Program gain cutting edge knowledge in mental health diagnoses and interventions. Given the fact that there is a high incidence of mental illness in Mississippi as a whole, and the Delta counties more specifically, programs such as this remain important," says Dr. Vincent Venturini, chair of the Department of Social Work.

"I want to commend our Master of Social Work students for their hard work and encourage them to stay focused through the duration of the program. The holiday season often brings stress and mental illness, so informing the community at-large on this subject, is in keeping with Valley's mission which is to impact positively the quality of life in the Mississippi Delta and beyond," said Acting University President, Alfred Rankins, Jr.
