North Carolina Central University News September 2016 NCCU Hosts Local Law Enforcements Chiefs North Carolina Central University's (NCCU) Department of Criminal Justice hosted the Executive Management: Women in Policing Forum featuring local police chiefs. NCCU alumna, Patrice Andrews of Morrisville Police Department and Cerelyn "C.J." Davis of Durham Police Department discussed women in law enforcement and career advancement in policing. Andrews and Davis also gave recounts of their experience in law enforcement and insight into essential policing responsibilities to a packed auditorium of students, faculty, staff and members of the community on August 30, 2016. Andrews, who began her role this year as the first woman to serve as police chief for Morrisville Police Department discussed the lows and highs of her career that including her first few years as a police officer. "My personal experiences might not be the experiences of young officers, young female officers coming through today," Andrews said. Prior to her appointment, Andrews served as the commander in the Criminal Investigations Division of the Durham Police Department. Andrews earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice at North Carolina Central University. In 2011, she graduated from West Point Leadership Academy, and she recently completed the FBI National Academy's 263rd training session in Quantico, Virginia. Both police chiefs agreed that diversity and sensitivity training is important to law enforcement. Davis informed the audience of the Durham Police Department's services to ensure the Hispanic community its efforts to provide multilingual services. "Someone who is bilingual is available twenty-four hours a day. I think it's important that we make sure we're diverse," Davis said. After working for the Atlanta Police Department for nearly 30 years, Davis was appointed chief of police for Durham Police Department in April. Prior to her appointment, Davis served as deputy chief of the strategy and special projects division for the City of Atlanta Police Department. Davis obtained a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Saint Leo University and also a master's degree from Central Michigan University. Following the panel discussion consisting of six questions, the event concluded with questions from the audience and a meet and greet session. SANDRA M.
