Southern U. Declares Exigency on Its Main Campus
Southern University’s Board of Supervisors voted on Friday to declare financial exigency on the Louisiana system’s main campus at Baton Rouge, The Advocatehttp://theadvocate.com/home/1193443-125/su-board-oks-exigency.html, a local newspaper, reported. The campus’s chancellor, James L. Llorens, said the step gives the university a “small window of opportunity” to reorganize its academic and administrative structure to cut costs. He plans to impose furloughs on tenured faculty and other employees, and to present a reorganization plan for the board to consider as soon as November 25.
Administrators have been making cuts across the university’s budget to close a $10-million gap, and have been pushing since Augusthttp://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/southern-u-declares-exigency-on-its-main-campus/%20http:/chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/southern-u-s-faculty-threatened-with-emergency-budget-cuts/35471 for the broad powershttp://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/southern-u-steps-toward-declaring-exigency-surprising-state-regents/35669 a declaration of exigencyhttp://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/vote-to-declare-financial-exigency-fails-at-southern-u/35975 gives them. Faculty leaders have opposed the move. Sudhir Trivedi, a professor of computer science who is president of the Faculty Senate, accused the university of “gutting the faculty” to obtain $1.7-million in savings, while at the same time doubling its subsidy to athletics, to $2.4-million.
