Department of Chemistry's Judith Kirkley Honored by South Carolina Independent Schools Association

Chemistry instructor Judith Kirkley was recently honored by the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) for her excellence in judging the organization's annual science fair for middle and high schools students.

Kirkley has judged the SCISA's annual science fair for the past five years. "It's a difficult job. It's not easy to judge between so many students who are excellent."

SCISA is a non-profit association composed of more than 100 independent schools in the state. The organization honored Kirkley "for her continued support and enthusiasm as a judge and judge coordinator."

As the lead judge for the fair, Kirkley was responsible for evaluating projects in all areas of science such as physical science, chemistry and biology.

Kirkley has been a full-time member of the faculty since 2006. She is responsible for overseeing the Department of Chemistry's laboratories, teaching courses and ensuring safety by establishing and updating protocols.

She often invites students from the science fair to Claflin to receive hands-on experience in the state-of-the-art laboratories at the University.

In 2011, she won the Service Award from the Orangeburg Chapter of The Links, Inc.
