Fisk University Awarded $404,000 Grant from Army Research Office for Defense Research
Fisk University has been awarded a $404K grant from the Army Research Office (ARO) of the United States Department of Defense to fund the acquisition of new, state-of-the-art, scientific instrumentation that will support the research infrastructure at the university.
Arnold Burger, director of the Center of Excellence for Biological Sensing and Sensors (BioSS) at Fisk University will serve as principal investigator. The new equipment and accessories will enable university scientists to conduct cutting edge scientific research to better understand complex materials. The grant will also enhance the student training activities in the BioSS research center; further supporting the development of high power infrared light sources for the next generation of sensors for defense applications.
"Fisk University takes pride in producing highly trained and knowledgeable scientists who later enter the nation's top graduate school programs. I am very excited to be awarded a grant that will upgrade and complement our existing research infrastructure," said Dr. Rodney Hanley, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "This investment in Fisk is another strong testament from the Department of Defense to the quality of research we are pursuing in the area of life and physical sciences."
Fisk undergraduate and graduate students will receive hands-on laboratory experiences in the advanced multi-disciplinary technologies, including electron microscopy, spectroscopy, thin film deposition and crystal growth of advanced materials that can then be exploited for electro-optic devices.
"I commend our team of scientists for their research achievements and anticipate that this new initiative will create sustainable research opportunities for our faculty and students," said Frank L. Sims, president. "This opportunity will help us to further attract additional research funding, expand our collaborations with national labs, and will significantly affect the next generation of scientists."
