Savannah State hosts forensic science week

Savannah State University's (SSU) Department of Forensic Sciencehttps://www.savannahstate.edu/cost/mar-env-science/SavannahStateUniversityDepartmentofForensicScience.shtml will host a week of lectures and events from April 3-7, 2017. The week will culminate in the unveiling of a months-long project of forensic facial reconstruction sculptures on Friday, April 7, 2 p.m., on the third floor of Hubert building D, room 442.

Last semester, forensic science students reviewed scientific literature and studied cranial features, depth marker measurements and the process of creating a full-size, three-dimensional rendering of a person's face using only skeletal clues. The process requires study of anthropology, anatomy, mathematics and artistry.

Karla-Sue Marriott, Ph.D.http://www.savannahstate.edu/profiles/profile.aspx?n=Karla-Sue_Marriott, forensic science coordinator, then partnered with Eric Clarkhttp://www.savannahstate.edu/profiles/profile.aspx?n=Eric_Clark, art instructor, to help the students with the physical creation of the sculptures. "The purpose of higher education is to teach our students to be open-minded and think differently," Marriott said. "Interdisciplinary work is key for this. And they loved it."

The rest of the week's events are geared toward SSU students. A retired DEA agent will lead an analysis session and senior forensic science students will visit the U.S. Department of Homeland Security lab in Pooler.

All are invited to the unveiling and the forensic science fun day with games and more.
