Voorhees College News September 19, 2018 Voorhees College student is named a 2018 HBCU Competitiveness Scholar Voorhees College senior D 'Ariel Walker has been named a 2018 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Competitiveness Scholar by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The HBCU Competitiveness Scholars is the initiative's highest student recognition program. As a scholar, Walker recently attended the 2018 National HBCU Week in Washington, D.C. Walker was nominated by President W. Franklin Evans because of her academic achievement, campus and civic involvement, and entrepreneurial spirit. "Ms. Walker is a well-rounded student who participates in various activities and organizations on campus. She is also a model student that possesses the character needed to compete and represent Voorhees College well," Evans said. During the conference, Walker participated in workshops designed to improve leadership, encourage ongoing personal and professional development, and discover areas of innovation and entrepreneurship. Following the conference, she, along with 62 students from 53 other HBCUs, will prepare to compete for top opportunities that will benefit long-term career and life outcomes. Competitiveness Scholars are afforded opportunities to highlight their exceptional contributions to institutions, ignite new passions, and explore ideas critical to lifelong growth and development. The U.S. Education Department stated Competitiveness Scholars will spend their one-year term learning and sharing "proven and promising practices" to support individual and HBCU competitiveness, with the goal of "strengthening their prospects for career and life success." Walker said she hopes to gain more of a leadership role with this opportunity to motivate her fellow peers. "I have aspirations of becoming an elementary school teacher and as a Competitiveness Scholar, I will have more networking and internship opportunities to get me closer to my career goal. To be a scholar, you are advancing and overachieving to be the best you can be in school, sports, community, and life," Walker said. In addition, Walker is the 2018-2019 Miss Voorhees College elect. She is a senior majoring in Child Development from Augusta, Ga.
