Nationally-Ranked Hampton Sailing Team Captures Henry Luce Trophy

Coming off a week where the Hampton University sailing team garnered its first co-ed national ranking in school history, the Pirates captured the team title for the second year in a row on Sunday at the Henry Luce Trophy hosted by Cornell University.

"This was a solid finish to a great week for our program," said Hampton coach Alessandro Ambrossi.  "First national ranking in school history, 18th in Gill Sailing World Co-Ed rankings, and then win a very strong meet for the second year in a row, puts us in a good spot heading into the final weeks of the fall."
Hampton scored 36 points to edge Christopher Newport University (44) and host Cornell University (58) for the team title in the 18-team regatta.  With the win, Hampton qualifies for the War Memorial Regatta at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY on Oct. 28-29.

The A Division boat consisting of Maximilian Kuester and Filip Stevanovic had two second place finishes and three third place finishes in seven races to score 23 points.  In the B Division, the boat consisting of Elkisabeth Kuester and Luca Taglialegne and Elisabeth Kuester had a very strong weekend with five first-place finishes, a third and a fifth place in the seven races for a total of 13 points.

The Pirates will see action again on October 21-22 in the Kings Point Open in Kings Point, NY.
