KSU Boasts High Level of Community Engagement

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Over the last nine months, Kentucky State University's (KSU) Department of Athletics continued its annual initiative to serve the community. During the 2010-11 academic year, the Thorobreds participated in various events, such as food drives, walks and hosted their annual Pink Zone game.

KSU's community engagement initiatives are driven by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), a group that provides cognitive perception of the NCAA, SIAC, and KSU rules, regulations, and policies that affect the welfare of student-athletes at Kentucky State University. The mission of the SAAC is to promote a positive and productive image for the student-athletes on the campus of Kentucky State University. The SAAC seeks to promote a strong foundation of excellence of and for quality athletes, which enables the SAAC to be a productive committee within the athletic department.

"We pride ourselves in the various community activities and projects we participate in throughout the year," said Assistant Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator and SAAC Advisor, Jamie Moore. "Whenever the community is in need, our student-athletes and staff are always willing to lend a helping hand. Our student-athletes know how important it is to support the community that, in turn, supports both their education and collegiate sports career."

The 2010-11 SAAC was led by Fatimah Shabaaz (President), Nikki Douglas (Vice President) and DeNae Shelton (Secretary).

"Our SAAC has established a legacy of strong community service and engagement," stated Director of Athletics, Dr. Denisha L. Hendricks. "We are extremely proud of their commitment to the local community and abroad."
