Greetings HBCU Library Alliance members,

Continue to practice self-care and an abundance of caution in your activities.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Mrs. Sandra Phoenix, Executive Director, it is with great pride and honor that I announce a $1,000,000.00 grant award from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the 5-year Change Capital: Accelerating Financial Growth, Sustaining the HBCU Library Alliance project.  The Change Capital will provide financial support for a new business model. This award is in collaboration with the three-year Mellon-funded Non-Profit Finance Fund's (NFF) Building Financial Resilience project. The HBCU Library Alliance was accepted into the 2020 NFF cohort to develop sustainable and adaptable business models.  This included reviewing the Alliance's financial model, strategic plan and mission to unlock the organization's future potential beyond membership dues revenue.

I am thrilled that this award will allow the HBCU Library Alliance to invest in additional staff to support the Executive Director in growing and sustaining the organization. Change capital will support the contributions of technical consultants, and the financial stability that will be provided through the establishment of a first-time Reserve Fund.  The onboarding of new staff will be invaluable in increasing our ability to identify and develop new programs that can benefit the membership.

You, our members, are the core of what we do. This investment will allow us to invest in you, by developing new programs with your input, and developing services in alignment with the HBCU Library Alliance strategic plan.  The Change Capital support will include; 1) the addition of a new permanent full-time Executive Assistant position; 2) the addition of a new permanent full-time staff position of Development Officer; 3) the addition of a new permanent full-time staff position of Program Manager to support outreach and educational activities; 4) three years of targeted Grant Writer assistance to assist the Development Officer in applying for foundation and government funding and to raise matching funds to complete the "Building Capacity-HBCU" project; 5) one year of Marketing consulting to develop strategies for earned income and membership growth through corporate and academic partnerships; 6) engagement with a Communications/Web Design Company to develop recommendations for upgrading the HBCU Library Alliance's branding through careful review of the needs of its audiences, and; 7) the establishment of a first-time Reserve Fund.

The Board of Directors and Executive Director are excited to continue, reimage, and sustain the work of our founding directors Loretta Parham, Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library (GA), Janice Franklin, Alabama State University, Emma Bradford Perry (retired), Southern A&M University (LA), Elsie Weatherington (retired), Virginia State University and Tommy Holton (deceased), Dillard University (LA) for their vision of a "voice of advocacy" for HBCUs. We are also grateful for our members' continuous allegiance to HBCU libraries; this grant honors your work and service to our community.

Kudos to the esteemed HBCU Library Alliance Board of Directors for their insight and leadership during this season of change. Thanks are due the Non-Profit Finance Fund consultants Sherr Lo and Robert Kagan for their knowledge, persistence and support as we learned together and developed a new business model for the Alliance. Thanks to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for their belief in our work and this incredible funding opportunity to advance the HBCU Library Alliance. Thanks to Mellon Foundation staff Patricia Hswe and Michael Gossett for their advocacy and encouragement throughout this process.

The Change Capital support will include; 1) the addition of a new permanent full-time Executive Assistant position; 2) the addition of a new permanent full-time staff position of Development Officer; 3) the addition of a new permanent full-time staff position of Program Manager to support outreach and educational activities; 4) three years of targeted Grant Writer assistance to assist the Development Officer in applying for foundation and government funding and to raise matching funds to complete the “Building Capacity—HBCU” project; 5) one year of Marketing consulting to develop strategies for earned income and membership growth through corporate and academic partnerships; 6) engagement with a Communications/Web Design Company to develop recommendations for upgrading the HBCU Library Alliance’s branding through careful review of the needs of its audiences, and; 7) the establishment of a first-time Reserve Fund.

The Board of Directors and Executive Director are excited to continue, reimage, and sustain the work of our founding directors Loretta Parham, Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library (GA), Janice Franklin, Alabama State University, Emma Bradford Perry (retired), Southern A&M University (LA), Elsie Weatherington (retired), Virginia State University and Tommy Holton (deceased), Dillard University (LA) for their vision of a “voice of advocacy” for HBCUs. We are also grateful for our members’ continuous allegiance to HBCU libraries; this grant honors your work and service to our community.

Thanks to Mellon Foundation staff Patricia Hswe and Michael Gossett for their advocacy and encouragement throughout this process.

This award is in collaboration with the three-year Mellon-funded Non-Profit Finance Fund’s (NFF) Building Financial Resilience project. The HBCU Library Alliance was accepted into the 2020 NFF cohort to develop sustainable and adaptable business models. This included reviewing the Alliance’s financial model, strategic plan and mission to unlock the organization’s future potential beyond membership dues revenue. I am thrilled that this award will allow the HBCU Library Alliance to invest in additional staff to support the Executive Director in growing and sustaining the organization.
