University of the District of Columbia News April 6, 2011 UDC Receives Seed Grant for Ethiopian Partnership The US Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has announced the University of the District of Columbia is one of five American universities to receive a seed grant for innovative partnerships. UDC's program with Bahir Dar University will receive $15,000 from the embassy in order to establish a research program focusing on renewable energy. US Ambassador Donald E. Booth noted, "Ethiopia's visionary expansion of tertiary education throughout the country opens up many educational opportunities. The US Embassy is delighted to provide initial funding to support new and innovative collaborations and partnerships between higher education institutions in Ethiopia and in the US." "This is another tremendous opportunity for UDC to reach across the globe and establish a presence that will benefit our students and faculty," said Allen L. Sessoms, President of the University System of the District of Columbia. Other American universities awarded in this program are: Cornell, Langston and Washington State Universities and the University of Florida. The objectives of the "Building Sustainable US-Ethiopian University Partnerships" are to grow mutually beneficial and sustainable relationships between US and Ethiopian universities, and to strengthen the skills and experience of faculty and administrators in both countries in developing and implementing partnerships.
