Voorhees alumnus becomes CEO of a national bank

Voorhees College graduate Thomas Felder was recently named the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Commonwealth National Bank in Mobile, Ala.
As CEO, Felder will be responsible for expanding the bank's customer base and building relationships with small businesses and professionals, especially in its hometown market of Mobile.
Felder said he is ready to fill the void of Mobile’s banking space and within the state of Alabama. “The banking industry is shrinking and we are well positioned as a small community bank in Mobile. Our bank has a strong team approach and our culture attracts great bankers,” Felder said
With more than 25 years in the banking industry, Felder began his career at First National Bank of South Carolina. Later, he worked for Victory Savings Bank, Bank of America, American State Bank in Tulsa, Okla., the United States Small Business Administration, Seaway Bank & Trust Company in Chicago, Ill.
Prior to becoming CEO for Commonwealth National Bank, Felder worked at Tri State Bank of Memphis, Tenn., where he served for nearly two years.
Jacquitta Powell Green, chairwoman of Commonwealth's Board of Directors, said in a press release it was Felder’s banking experience and expertise that made him qualified for the position.
Felder said Commonwealth National Bank is uniquely positioned as an alternative to the larger banks that it competes with. “We are able to be nimble and accessible with our decision making. Founded in 1976, our name has not changed and our people, a stable balance sheet, excellent markets, and a focused-growth strategy continue to be differentiators,” Felder said.
Felder is a native of Columbia, S.C. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Voorhees College and a master’s degree in business administration from Atlanta University (present day Clark Atlanta University).
He is a Life Member at Large of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., a Paul Harris Fellow, and an active Episcopalian.
Felder is married to his wife Jeanne, and they have three adult sons, one daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren.
