Free Webinar:  Developing a Cross-Curricular Humanities Course to Explore Institutional History - Jean, Greene, Hinds Community College (MS), Wednesday, March 15th, 1:00 ET

Description: Hinds Community College-Utica, an HBCU in rural Mississippi, launched a new course centered on the founding of our institution in an effort to increase student engagement. Introduction to the Humanities is a team-taught course offered by the Humanities. The students were engaged in a study of Black rural education in the context of the Jim Crow south through a careful reading of Black Man's Burden, the autobiography of our founder, William H. Holtzclaw. Funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the course has allowed our small campus the opportunity to investigate Holtzclaw's life and legacy through both faculty research and students' undergraduate research projects.

In this session, we will discuss lessons learned from this experience for colleges who may wish to explore institutional history with their own students. We will discuss the creation of our shared syllabus, an overview of the project, incorporating undergraduate student research projects, and engaging students in archival work.

Takeaways:  After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Share the process of working on a cross-curricular project

  • Raise awareness about William Holtzclaw and his place in the history of education in Mississippi

  • Describe strategies to engage students in exploring institutional history.

Instructor:  Jean Greene is currently Director of Library Services and Archives for Hinds Community College-Utica Campus.  She has been employed with Hinds Community College in various Learning Resources positions for over twenty years (sixteen years as Director of the William H. Holtzclaw Library and Archives, four years as Serials and Reference Librarian for McLendon Library on the Raymond Campus, and three years as the Rankin Campus librarian).  Her other library experience includes Head of Northside Branch Library (currently Charles W. Tisdale Library) for the Jackson-Hinds Library system and AV Department Supervisor for the Mississippi Library Commission.

Greene represents 2-Year Technical and Community Colleges on the HBCU Library Alliance Board.  She has served as part of the mentor team for the Wayne State IDOL project as well as one of the mentors for the HBCU Library Alliance Leadership program in 2010 and 2012.

Jean created the nine panel traveling exhibit (https://jaygee54.wordpress.com/ )in 2011 for the Utica Campus titled: The Utica Normal and Industrial Institute: The History, The Legacy, The Promise.  She was as an instructor for the "Accessing Internet" classes for Project HyperLeap as well as an instructor for the "Teacher Quality Enhancement Partnership Project" for Jackson State University.

Jean is active in community service in the Utica area.  She is a member of the American Library Association, National Education Association, Mississippi Association of Educators, Utica Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, Friends of Utica and Utica Area Habitat for Humanity.
