Renowned Cancer Biologist Speaks to Students
The Edward Waters College Biology Department welcomed cancer biologist Dr. Charles Brenner to speak to students Tuesday, January 20th. Dr. Brenner is a Professor and Chair of Biochemistry at the Iowa Carver College of Medicine of the University of Iowa. Dr. Brenner holds a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from Stanford University.
During his lecture, Dr. Brenner elaborated on the common grounds of research conducted at the University of Iowa and discussed his proposal for a  joint venture with Dr. Brain Seymour, Director of the EWC Center for the Prevention of Health Disparities, to study obesity and cancer in the African American community in Jacksonville.
Dr. Brenner is a member of the SLOAN Center for Exemplary Mentoring where he assists minority students interested in attending graduate programs in STEM fields. He encouraged biology majors enrolled at Edward Waters College to apply for summer internships in the Iowa Carver College of Medicine and emphasized that exposure to programs like this greatly increase their chances for matriculation into graduate programs.
Dr. Brian Seymour spent a portion of last summer with Dr. Brenner for an introduction to the University of Iowa's SLOAN Center for Exemplary Mentoring.
