Savannah State hosts forensic science week
Savannah State University's (SSU) Department of Chemistry and Forensic Science will host its third annual Forensic Science Week with a week of lectures and events April 2-7, 2018. The week will culminate in public workshops on forensic anthropology fieldwork, virtual forensics and facial reconstruction.
Led by forensic science students, participants can expect to get an in-depth look at how the forensic process works. Jazzmine Jones, the Forensic Science Club president, will lead guests through using state-of-the-art technology in a virtual crime lab, Friday, April 6, 1 p.m., Hubert building D, third floor. This exclusive technology is only available at Savannah State and space is limited.
While waiting for a chance to try the virtual reality crime lab, participants may attend a facial reconstruction workshop, hosted by forensic science student Tyra Deloatch, Friday, April 6, 1 p.m., Hubert building D, third floor. The workshop will outline the steps used to create a person's likeness using biological clues.
The public is also invited to attend a lecture from Frederick Snow, Ph.D., a forensic anthropologist who has worked with the United Nations, National Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and others. He will speak Thursday, April 5, throughout the day from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Drew-Griffith, room 233.
The rest of the week's events are geared toward SSU students. A retired DEA agent will lead a substance analysis session and a patent examiner will share insight on intellectual property. The Forensic Science Club will also participate in a community service project on Saturday.
The Thursday lecture and Friday workshops are free and open to the public.
