Distinguished Lecture Series: 'Human and Civil Rights'

ASU's annual Distinguished Lecture Series was held on Sunday, March 5, with a goal of exploring current issues while helping to advance the University's undergraduate research programs.

Alabama State University welcomed Dr. Montre' D. Carodine, professor of law at the University of Alabama, as the featured speaker for the annual Distinguished Lecture Series on Sunday, March 5.
The event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Carodine spoke on this year's theme, "The Continuing Search for Human and Civil Rights in America: The Law, Race and Justice."

"These are tough times, so the topic is a timely one," said Carodine. "These are hostile times for people of color in America, and anyone else who has been 'othered' by society. Perhaps it has always been true since this country's inception, but I think that there is a feeling of heightened hostility as of late."

During her speech, Carodine referred to a 2009 article that she wrote, titled "The Mischaracterization of the Negro."

"I remember stating in the introduction to that article, when President Obama was elected for the first time, we are certainly not in a post racial society; but rather we're in a transitioning racial society. And as you well know, anytime there's a transition...that's when you're going to have the most pain and the most struggle. And I think that's what we're seeing right now with the current climate in this country," Carodine added.

Now in its 5th year, the series is an event that raises awareness of global and national issues, while raising funds to provide for travel expenses related to undergraduate research.

Interim President Leon C. Wilson started the Lecture Series when he served as the University's Provost. Speakers have included Dr. David Williams, a renowned social scientist, a Harvard University professor and health policy adviser to the Bush, Clinton and Obama administrations; Dr. Charles Moody Sr., a longtime champion and trailblazer for equity in education; Dr. Wayne Flynt, a Professor Emeritus at Auburn University, the editor of the online Encyclopedia of Alabama and author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Book "Poor but Proud: Alabama's Poor Whites;" and Dr. Bryan K. Fair, an author and distinguished law professor at the University of Alabama School of Law.
