Howard University News June 27, 2018 Howard University College Of Engineering And Architecture Announces Partnership With Carnegie Mellon University College Of Engineering Howard University's College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) is partnering with the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) College of Engineering to develop a dual-degree program enabling Ph.D. candidates, at both institutions, to simultaneously earn a degree at each institution. Successful candidates will be awarded Ph.D. degrees, in the selected area of engineering, from Howard University and Carnegie Mellon University. The partnership is designed to provide opportunities for underrepresented students while obtaining a doctoral degree in any area of engineering available within the programs offered at CEA or CMU. To qualify, students must apply and be admitted to engineering Ph.D. programs from both institutions, but the programs need not be in the same department at both institutions. Students will spend a minimum of three academic semesters at each institution and will benefit from having two academic advisors, as well as access to a greater number of courses, a larger set of research facilities, and a wider research community located in two major metropolitan areas. "The clear opportunities presented by this new partnership constitute yet another outstanding example of what we can and will continue to accomplish as a college," says Achille Messac, dean of Howard University's College of Engineering and Architecture. "Our aim is to explore a number of different forms of collaboration between Howard and CMU," says James H. Garrett, Jr., dean of Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering. In addition to the dual-degree program, both institutions are joining forces for the Summer Bridge program. Students will engage in research projects and professional development at the partnering institution, along with coaching for a smooth transition into the dual-degree Ph.D. program.
