Titus Brooks Heagins Photography Exhibit Opens at NCCU Art Museum
The North Carolina Central University Art Museum will host the work of documentary and fine art photographer Titus Brooks Heagins in an exhibit titled "Witness: A Retrospective of Titus Brooks Heagins," Aug. 25 - Oct. 4.
Heagins is regarded as one of North Carolina's most significant photographers. His projects have taken him across five continents, and he has worked extensively in Cuba and Haiti. Fifty works are part of the NCCU Art Museum showing, including works acquired by the N.C. Museum of Art in 2004 and 2009. Select images from Heagins' early bodies of work, "One Faith, One God, One Baptism" and "Rainbow over Havana" are part of the exhibit, as are contemporary bodies of work, "Inked," "Rorschach," "Durham Stories" and "Haiti: Before the Earth Moved."
Heagins recently completed a photographic project for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, titled "African-American Music Trails." Portfolios of his photography are included in the collection of several museums, including the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington, the Lehigh University Museum, Zoelner Galleries and Casa de Africa in Havana, Cuba. He has exhibited widely across the country and abroad. Heagins holds a bachelor's of art degree from Duke University and an MFA in photography from the University of Michigan.
The NCCU Art Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call the museum at 919-530-6211.
