Director of Library Services Launches Online Course and E-Textbook to
Preserve Heirlooms

January 14, 2011

The Director of Library Services at Johnson C. Smith University has
launched an online course, Organizing and Preserving Family and
Religious Records: A Step-by-Step Guide and

an E-Textbook Preserving Your Records: An Online Training Workshop to
help families and religious institutions organize and preserve their
heirlooms.

Many of you know Monika Rhue has been passionate about archives and
helping others preserve their heirlooms since her first training session
with HBCU Archives Institute in 2001.

Her inspiration for pursuing an archival consultant business was to help
ordinary people learn the value of their heirlooms and how these
heirlooms help to document the social and

personal lives of people, places, and events not found in mainstream
society.

The materials in the E-Textbook and online course have been practiced on
undergraduate students at Johnson C. Smith University as part of the
Introduction to Archives course taught

by Mrs. Rhue and locally for religious institutions in North Carolina.
This is the first online course and E-Textbook design to help families
and religious institutions preserve their heirlooms.

Many families and religious institutions worked hard to collect letters,
programs, obituaries, scrapbooks, manuscripts, vital records, and
photographs but do not know how to organize and

preserve the stuff they collected. Now families, historians, and
religious institutions have a step-by-step system to help them care for
their heirlooms.
