WVAS-FM Awarded Major Grant

WVAS-FM, known as "The Voice of Alabama State University," has received a $25,000 grant to continue the station’s longstanding history of community service.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has awarded WVAS-FM a major grant to help the station spread the word about its continuing community service.

The station competed against other stations from around the country and was selected to win the $25,000 “My Source” award. The money will be used to market the station and to let listeners know that WVAS is an important part of the community and an important source for music, news and community information.

“We are very excited about receiving this grant. As part of our application, we talked about the fact that we reach 17 counties and that we have an extremely diverse audience,” said Candy Capel, WVAS station manager. “We also noted in our grant application that Montgomery is the cradle of the Confederacy and the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement … and we get people to meet in the middle through our music.”

WVAS has a long history of service in Montgomery and surrounding communities.

The station participated in the “Annual Radio for Red Cross” blood drive (January 2010); provided the musical entertainment for the grand opening of the Hampstead Public Library Branch (March 2010); participated in the cultural parade hosted by Goodwyn Middle School (April 2010); hosted the “Taste for Haiti” fundraiser in Old Cloverdale (April 2010); participated in the annual “Deputy Dave Family & Friends Day” in Ramer (April 2010); and provided the musical entertainment for the AUM Mixer during finals week (May 2010).
